BANGKOK, 7 July 2012 – The Commerce Ministry has announced its success in its direct sales of rice to the government of Côte d’Ivoire, worth more than a hundred million US dollars.
Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom revealed on Friday that Foreign Trade Department Director-General Manat Soiploy and Secretary to the Commerce Minister Verawoot Vatjanapukka traveled to Côte d’Ivoire to settle a G-to-G rice trade negotiation during June 26th and 28th.
The latest negotiation was the continuation of the talks the Commerce Ministry earlier held with the Minister of Trade of Côte d’Ivoire in Thailand.
Mr. Boonsong said that the Thai delegation has successfully concluded the deal, which involves 240,000 tons of 4 different types of Thai rice worth 145 million baht.
The Commerce Minister said that the successful rice trade with Côte d’Ivoire, which is the first G2G trade between the two countries, will pave way to more deals in the future.
According to Mr. Boonsong, Côte d’Ivoire imports around 900,000 tons of rice each year, 58 percent of which are from Thailand.
