BANGKOK, 1 June 2012 – The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare is instructing provincial labour officers to hold meetings with employers of Myanmar workers to discuss ways to improve their working and living conditions.
Following Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi’s plea for better migrants’ rights, Director-General Arthit Issamo said his department is working on issuing documents stipulating the workers’ rights and benefits in the Burmese language as well as providing Myanmar translators to help workers who want to file complaints to Thai authorities.
He elaborated that provincial labour officers are also set to hold talks with employers of migrant workers to ensure legal protection for them. According to the Director-General, the employers are obliged to facilitate their migrant workers to undergo the nationality verification process.
