BANGKOK, Jan 14 – Thailand’s Department of Rural Roads is preparing for the formation of the ASEAN Community (AC) late this year by allocating Bt264 million to install bilingual direction signs on rural roads to welcome tourists from neighboring countries.

Daroon Saengchai, director-general of the department, said that such signs would bear English and the language of the neighboring country near the region of the roads.

In the South, direction signs would give data in English and Jawi, while those in regions near Cambodia would bear English and Cambodian messages, he said.

Installing such signs will be done in the next five years and the Bt264 million budget is part of the department’s Bt62 billion budget for road construction and repair in the same period, Mr Daroon said.
