NAN, 9 January 2014 Chicken egg farms in Nan province have experienced lowered production output due to reduced daylight hours caused by morning fog.
According to egg farm owners in Mueang district of Nan, the thick fog in the mornings has blocked out the sunlight, which is an important stimulating factor in making the hens feed and lay eggs. Phithakwong Wongsongkhram, a farm owner, said production at his farm has dropped to between 8,000 and 9,000 eggs per day whereas production would normally be about 10,000 eggs per day.
Chicks have also been dying because of the cold spell lingering over the province. The farms have been trying to solve this problem by turning the lights on in the mornings to warm up the shed and to stimulate hens into feeding.
