BANGKOK, 13 Sep 2013 Egg prices are expected to drop during the vegan festival and school break due to reducing public demands.
Deputy Commerce Minister Yanyong Phuangrach attributed the current high prices of eggs to lower output. He proposed a short term solution by balancing demand and supply via the use of the Government’s Blue Flag Scheme. He explained that the scheme would accelerate egg supplies to the market at a cheaper price while also helping reduce the cost of living.
Mr. Yanyong nonetheless urged egg producers to sell eggs at the Commerce Ministry’s suggested price.
According to the deputy minister, when compared to neighboring countries and other parts of the world, Thai eggs still have relatively low prices. Currently Hong Kong offers 8 baht per egg, Cambodia at 5 baht, and Lao PDR at 4.20 baht.
Only Malaysia offers eggs at a very low price of 20 satang each.
The Deputy Commerce Minister ensured fairness for both egg producers and consumers, instructing Blue Flag restaurants nationwide not to increase the price of their ready to eat meal.
Internal Trade Department officials would also step up price inspections to prevent vendors from taking unfair advantages from the current high prices of eggs.
