BANGKOK, 12 March 2012 – The Thai Industries Federation has praised the government’s initiatives to build dykes around industrial parks to prevent future flooding.
Mr. Payungsak Chartsuthipol, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said that the government’s plan to build barriers around the industrial parks is commendable.
His comment followed reports that the Stop Global Warming Association has asked the Central Administrative Court to issue an injunction suspending the construction of anti-flood dykes around the seven industrial parks in the province on the grounds that the barriers will cause damage to nearby homes in the event of future floods.
Mr. Payungsak said that the construction of the dykes is necessary and must be completed before the rainy season arrives, as the lack of such preventive measures could mean further damage to plants and workers as well as the country’s economy.
He added that related entrepreneurs are ready to make a report on the impact of the project’s on environment and health in order to appease disgruntled residents who live near the dykes, and activists.
The FTI Chairman went on to say that around 30-40 % of the plants, which have gone on the post-flood restoration process, have resumed their normal operations, with the remainder still working on the repair of machinery and waiting for new parts.
