Residents lined up outside the Pattaya branch of Government Savings Bank to get their hands on limited-edition coin banks honoring the 70-year reign of the late HM the King.

The bank was offering the coin banks as part of the annual National Savings Day as a bonus to those who opened new accounts.

Branch manager Wanna Pitakkorn said the “Chalerm­prakiat Coin Bank of HM King Rama IX” were given to those who deposit 200 baht or more and only 500 were available Oct. 31.

The bank’s supply ran out within 30 minutes.

Business owner Kithipan Chaipatrathawongtana brought his 6-year-old daughter to open up a bank account and deposit cash. They were happy to get their hands on one of the banks and said they will cherish it in remembrance of His Majesty, who always encouraged Thai people to save and live within their means.
