BANGKOK, 2 August 2012  – The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) is set to spend more on the construction of dikes around key industrial estates, following reports of a possible delay in the initial project.

IEAT Governor Verapong Chaiperm revealed on Wednesday that the construction of dikes at all 6 industrial estates, with a total distance of 60 kilometers, under the IEAT supervision, will likely be delayed and fail to complete before the estimated seasonal flood flows downstream.

As a result, the IEAT is considering the purchase of ready-for-use flood barriers from UK-based HESCO, which have an active life of 5 years, to ensure that the flood prevention system will be in place at all industrial estates in time.

Mr. Verapong said that the purchase proposal, which is expected to cost 180 million baht, will be submitted to the IEAT Board for consideration by mid-August.

He stated that HESCO’s barriers allow for faster installation, when compared with other producers’ offers, with only a few workers to set up a 100-meter barrier within 20 minutes.

The IEAT Governor stated that the same type of flood barriers has been installed once during last year’s flood crisis at the Din Daeng-Donmuang Tollway ramps.
