MICT boosting sales of OTOP products through e-commerce

BANGKOK, 4 May 2011  – The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is urging the use of e-commerce to promote products under the One Tambon One Product (OTOP) program and has held a seminar to give entrepreneurs related know-how. 

Deputy Permanent Secretary for ICT Worapat Tiewthanom stated that the Ministry had cooperated with TOT Plc, Thailand Post and Krung Thai Bank in organizing a seminar on the e-commerce system for OTOP entrepreneurs.

The activity was aimed to equip participants with knowledge on the utilization of ICT as a new channel for trade and the building of a business space online for promoting and selling their products. The attending entrepreneurs were also educated about the management of e-commerce businesses, the payment process, shipping and handling and product follow-ups.

Mr Worapat indicated that OTOP products still had much room to expand within the e-commerce market. Based on data from the National Statistical Office, OTOP products accounted for merely 4.5 percent of the total e-commerce trade value of over 500 billion THB in 2010. The promotion of local products through e-commerce is expected to help generate more income to communities and in turn allow residents to be more self-sufficient.
