BANGKOK, 13 Feb 2014, The Department of Primary Industries and Mines will focus on the development of economic minerals mining, especially potash.
According to DPIM Director General Panithan Jindaphu, Thailand currently has 3 major potash mines, which are operated by ASEAN Potash Mining in Chaiyaphum, Asia Pacific Potash Corp. in Udon Thani, and ThaiCali Company Limited in Nakhonratchasima Province.
Only ASEAN Potash Mining Company has yet to complete an environmental impact assessment required by the Office of National Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning. While Thai Cali Company will be able to begin its operation later this year, Asia Pacific Potash Corporation can kick off its business as soon as it is given a nod by the majority of Udon Thani residents.
Aside from Potash mining, the DPIM will also place an emphasis on improving oil shale mining in Tak Province, exploring for more reserves and implementing the latest technology in extracting and refining oil shale. Other value-added and recycling practices will also be incorporated into the plan, such as using oil shale wastes in cement production or in construction, the Director General said.
