BANGKOK, Feb 23 – The Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on Sunday monitored the situation of mobile phone users cancelling Advanced Info Service (AIS) as their service provider as an anti-government protest.
NBTC indicated that changing a service provider has two options — using the number or changing to a new one.
If a mobile phone wishes to use the same number, he/she may face a SIM card’s temporary shutdown. The maximum of 60,000 numbers can be transferred per day to another service provider.
Meanwhile, AIS, the country’s largest mobile phone operator, asked its subscribers for sympathy after PDRC secretary-general Suthep Thuangsuban had urged People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) supporters to cancel AIS service and opt for other mobile phone companies in order to affect the revenues of the Shinawatra family.
Mr Suthep urged his supporters to break their AIS SIM cards as a symbol to end support for the company founded by ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.
AIS on Saturday made a plea in a text message sent to its 40 million subscribers, saying it had no connection to Mr Thaksin or any of his family.
