New factory openings and factory expansions increase 9% in first 10 months of 2014

BANGKOK, 7 November 2014 – Requests for new factory openings and factory expansions increased by 9% over the first 10 months of 2014, amounting to an investment value of 46 billion baht.

Phasu Lohanchun, director-general of the Department of Industrial Works, revealed on Thursday there have been 4,445 requests for the opening of new plants and plant expansions during January and October this year. The combined investment value is a nine percent increase from the same period of the previous year. Mr. Phasu expects the amount of requests to increase further because of the government’s measure to accelerate state agencies’ budget disbursal.

According to Mr. Phasu, the industries with the most requests for new plants include metal and non-metal producers, auto and auto parts manufacturers, auto repair businesses, wood processors and wood products makers, and the food industry. The industries with the most requests for plant expansion is the automobile industry and businesses related to power generation.

Meanwhile, the number of factory closure requests over the first 10 months of the year was similar to previous years. There were 1,200 requests, valued at 27 billion baht.
