BANGKOK, 5 October 2013 – Prices of raw materials for the making of vegetarian food were observed to have increased in Bangkok as the vegetarian festival approaches.

Shopping activity for the raw materials was lively at Bangkok’s Yaowarat area, although prices for some of the goods have gone up. Reporters observed that the price of shitake mushroom has increased to 100 baht per kilogram, while bamboo shoots and soy protein prices have also gone up. However, it was observed that ready-made vegetarian dishes, sold at 50 baht per portion on average, did not have their prices increased compared to last year.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Commerce will be holding discounted sales of vegetarian food raw materials at 8 spots in 5 provinces during October 5-13. These sites include Minburi market complex, Onnut Fresh Mart, and Yingcharoen Market in Bangkok; Rangsit Market and Talad Thai in Pathumthani; Kamphaengphet market complex and Bang Lamphu Market in Khonkaen and Lim Ko Niew Shrine Market in Pattani. The goods will be sold at a discount of between 10-20%.
