BANGKOK, 17 September 2013 The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) is closely monitoring the rising water levels in the Chao Phraya River following the flooding of nearly 1,000 homes in Ayutthaya.

Based on the RID’s measurement of water in various sections of the Chao Phraya River, 1,260 cubic meters of water was flowing past Mueang district of Nakhon Sawan per second on Tuesday while 1,299 cubic meters was passing through the Chao Phraya Dam.

Due to days of heavy downpours, the upstream dam has accelerated its release of water into the Lower Chao Phraya River as well as the Noi River, causing riverbank communities in eight Tambons in Ayutthaya to become inundated.

While local administrative bodies have accused the RID of releasing the massive volume of water without providing adequate warning, the agency said the local residents have been warned since September 12.

The RID said it will continue to monitor the situation along the Chao Phraya River as the water levels have a tendency to rise further.
