Thai Cabinet waives jewellery tariff, tax to boost trade

SURIN, July 30 – The Cabinet on Monday endorsed a waiver of tariff and value added tax for jewellery and personal income taxes from jewellery sales.

Government spokeswoman Sansanee Nakpong said the tariff and tax waiver will take effect until Dec 31, 2014, and covers nine types of previous stones, including ruby, emerald, topaz, garnet, opal, sapphire, zircon and jade.

Uncut stones of these nine types is included.

The Cabinet action means that individuals can import these gemstones without tariff. The measure is aimed at supporting Thailand to become the world’s hub of jewellery production.
