NANNING, Sept 3 – Thailand wants to export more fruit to China, as Thai fruit remains the country’s number one favourite with an export value at almost US$150 million this year.

The 10th China-ASEAN Expo is being held to promote trade and investment between China and ASEAN member countries.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is currently on an official visit to Nanning, capital of southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to attend the opening ceremony of the expo and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, which opens today and continues through Friday.

Sookchai Jriengprasert, director of Chiang Mai’s Agricultural Extension and Development Region 6 Office, is as well there to participate in the event as well as to look at the Chinese market to export more fruit there.

He said Chinese people like Thai fruit due to its good taste. Not only because of the taste, Thai fruit is also deemed safe to eat, for every process from production to export is closely monitored through standards set by Thailand’s Agriculture Department.

Longan, durian, lychee, and pomelo are the Chinese favourites, he said.

China is Thailand’s number one importer of Thai fruit, followed by Vietnam and the Philippines.
