Thailand pushes to supply rice to Indonesia

BANGKOK, 12 July 2013 The Foreign Ministry affirms that Thailand is pushing ahead with plans to supply up to 1 million tonnes of rice to Indonesia. 

Following a meeting with Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa during his official visit to Thailand, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said the kingdom is in the process of renegotiating terms and conditions of the government-to-government rice contract which was inked in 2011.

In March of that year, a memorandum of understanding was signed in which Thailand would supply up to 1 million tonnes of rice to Indonesia. Thailand hopes to sell as much as 3 million tonnes of rice to Indonesia, Bangladesh and the Philippines this year.

Mr Surapong elaborated that during the bilateral talks, both parties also discussed possible arrangement of the next Thai-Indonesian Joint Commission and the regional South China Sea dispute
