BANGKOK, Sept 17 — Thailand plans to ask both Myanmar and the Lao PDR to sell more electricity to Thailand during an ASEAN Energy Ministers meeting  to be held in Vientiane next week, senior officials said today.

Chavalit Pichalai, director-general of Thailand’s Energy Policy and Planning Office, said he would ask Energy Minister Narongchai Akrasanee at a meeting of senior officials tomorrow for negotiations with Myanmar on energy cooperation between the two countries including a Thai plan to increase electricity purchases from Myanmar to 10,000 megawatts from the current 1,500 megawatts.

Thailand also wants to widen cooperation with Myanmar on purchasing crude oil, Mr Chavalit said, adding that the issue would be raised at the ASEAN Energy Ministers meeting in Laos on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) governor Sunchai Khamnoonset said the Thai side would raise the issue of a change of process in buying electricity Laos for discussion with the landlocked country.
