BANGKOK, 2 March 2012 – The country’s Energy Conservation Promotion Fund, known as the ESCO Fund, has planned to spend big to encourage Thais to switch to alternative energy.
Permanent Secretary of the Energy Ministry Norkun Sitthiphong said on Thursday that the latest meeting of the Board of the ESCO Fund has approved 75 projects, which will be implemented in 2012, to promote the use of alternative energy.
All projects were estimated to need more than THE3.2 billion for the implementation altogether.
Mr. Norkun said that this year’s projects will emphasize the enhancement of the energy utilization efficiency, the development of alternative energy and the development of new strategic plans.
He added that these plans is expected to, altogether, help increase Thailand’s alternative energy use from the current level of 12% to 25% of overall energy utilization within 10 years.
Moreover, the ESCO Fund board meeting also allocated THB200 million to the R&D of alternative energy and another THB200 million to the energy conservation work.
Lastly, the meeting has approved THB350 million to be spent on the public relations of energy conservation in Thailand.
