Lampang – Damage assessment is being undertaken following a series of over 20 earthquakes centered on the Wang Nua district of Lampang on February 20 with the Director-General of the Meteorological Department saying aftershocks may continue for up to another month.

As many as 20 homes reported damage from the close succession of quakes, which were felt in many provinces of the northern region. Some homes were left with cracks and holes in their ceilings.

Roofing at the centuries old Wat Phra Tat Phrae Kerd was damaged in the incident but its central Buddha statue was untouched. While an emergency center has been setup, no injuries were reported after the quakes.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) indicated a total 22 earthquakes averaging 4.9 magnitude took place on February 20. Their epicenter was 21 kilometers below ground in Wang Nua district of Lampang and mostly affected four sub-districts.

A damage assessment has been ordered by the DDPM so that requests for assistance from the Ministry of Finance can be submitted.

The event was the second to stem from the Phayao Fault Line in 25 years. The first measured 5.1 in magnitude and took place in Pan district of Chiang Rai. The head of the Meteorological Department has urged all involved to remain vigilant.
