Bangkok – The government is in the process of seeking His Majesty the King’s approval of an election decree, according to a deputy prime minister.

Deputy premier in charge of legal affairs Wissanu Krea-ngam says that the election decree has been forwarded to His Majesty, and confirmed that even if the decree were to be issued later than January 4, the general election would still take place on February 24 as planned.

He added that should a party wish to include Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s name in its list of candidates for prime minister, it would be able to do so during the 5-day registration of MP candidates when the Election Commission will be accepting candidate applications, tentatively between January 11 and 18.

If nominated as a prime ministerial candidate in the forthcoming election, Gen Prayut would still be able to carry out his present duties, according to Wissanu. However, Gen Prayut would not be allowed to present a party’s policies, nor could he take part in election campaigns, because he is not a party member.
