Bangkok – Bangkok officials have cleared 348 of the 436 piers and pontoons in the city for safe use during Loy Krathong, ordering those deemed unsafe be closed for repairs.
Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Assawin Kwanmuang led the inspection of piers along the Chao Phraya River from Ta Chang Pier to Rama 8 Bridge pier.
Officials reported that of 436 piers in the city, 227 are on the Chao Phraya with the other 209 spread out among Bangkok’s canals. Inspections have found that only 348 are fit for use during the Loy Krathong Festival, 182 along the Chao Phraya River and 166 along canals. Up to 88 piers have been closed ahead of the celebration and fitted with warning signs.
Bangkok is organizing Loy Krathong festivities under Rama 8 Bridge on the Thonburi side and in the area by Khlong Ong Ang. Another 30 parks will be open on the holiday from 5a.m. to midnight, complete with security for the safety of revelers. In consideration of the environment, families are asked to use only one Krathong each and to limit their waste from food and drinks at the celebration.
