Sattahip brought a pirate theme to this year’s Songkran celebration, showcasing its fabled history as a den of black-flag bandits.

District Chief Anucha Intasorn and Sattahip Mayor Narong Boonbanjerdsri led the April 17 parade of navy sailors, police schools, and clubs.

The parade featured Buddhist relics and statues, cars full of Songkran beauty pageant contestants, photos of HM the King, the navy’s ships, a lighthouse and, finally, 7 treasure chests as symbols of Sattahip’s proclaimed pirate history.

Anucha said there have been legends and tall tales about pirates and the navy’s home base region for years, so this year’s Songkran parade brought some symbols of that legacy to the public.
