Bangkok – Thai officials are working around the clock with their German counterparts to extradite a monk taking refuge there. He is allegedly connected to the ongoing embezzlement case of Thailand’s temple maintenance fund.

The fugitive monk, a Thai national who was formerly known as Phra Prom Methee and is a former Deputy Abbot of Wat Samphanthawong, is reportedly asking for asylum in Germany.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan said the asylum seeker had refused to meet with the Royal Thai Police Commissioner General. It is suspected that the former deputy abbot might have had assistance in traveling to Germany.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has reiterated that officials are processing the case in accordance with the justice system and reassured the public that the government has no intention of tarnishing Buddhism nor using the case to make a political statement. He said that it is the duty of officials to bring escaped wrongdoers back to the Kingdom.
