Dear Hillary,
I want to buy a car here. Can a non-Thai legally buy over here? I don’t want to buy in someone else’s name as I have heard too many tales of woe doing that. I am looking for something good, secondhand, cheap and around 500,000 baht.

I see your requirements – good, secondhand, cheap. The answer my Petal is to pick any two of the three requirements as you won’t get all three in one vehicle. But yes, you can own it in your own name, as long as you have the right visa (a tourist visa won’t do). My only real tip is to get a fully qualified mechanic to give it the once-over before you sign any contracts. Remember that used car salesmen and politicians are on the top of the lists of least trusted jobs.
