His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej once spoke of the “teaching” of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother, who urged him to be aware of his duties and responsibilities. She explained to him the special significance of his name. King Bhumibol quoted his mother as saying, “In fact, your name Bhumibol is translated as Strength of the Land.”

His Majesty said, “When I thought of what mother had said, I came to realize that mother was teaching me and she wanted me to remain down to earth and work for the people.”
His Majesty the late King acted as the strength of the land, keeping close to his subjects and helping ease their hardships throughout 70 years of his reign. The name “Bhumibol Adulyadej” was given by King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), which hinted at the significance His Majesty was to have for ordinary Thai people.
The perfect upbringing from the Princess Mother provided His Majesty King Bhumibol with a stable background that enabled him to perform his royal duties and functions with perseverance, for the continuous development of the country on a sustainable basis.
His Majesty traveled to every corner of the Kingdom to work for the better welfare of the people and for the development of rural remote areas. He gave assistance to ease people’s sufferings and tackle various problems, even those concerning natural disasters and political crises, so that his subjects would be happy and would survive in the midst of both internal and external changes.
His Majesty King Bhumibol was a hard-working monarch, to match the meaning of his name, the Strength of the Land. He improved the livelihood of the people, and his merits and benevolence were also recognized internationally. Asiaweek magazine once published an article citing him as one of the most powerful people in Asia.
An excerpt from the article says: “With the entire nation looking up to him, His Majesty the King has continued to look out for the good of even the lowest in his kingdom. He influences politics without being political. In doing so, he has made an ancient monarchy into a crucial component of a progressive and prosperous democracy.”
