BANGKOK, Thailand – The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for southern Thailand, forecasting increased rainfall with heavy downpours in certain areas. Residents are urged to stay vigilant for flash floods and runoff, especially in mountainous regions, low-lying areas, and near water channels.
The rainfall is attributed to a strengthening northeast monsoon over the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and the Andaman Sea. Strong winds are also expected, with waves reaching 2-3 meters in the lower Gulf and more than 3 meters in areas experiencing thunderstorms. In the upper Gulf, waves will be around 2 meters but higher during storms. Mariners are advised to proceed with caution, and small boats in the lower Gulf are recommended to remain ashore during this period.
Temperature Drops in the North and Northeast
Meanwhile, a new high-pressure system from China has spread over northeastern Thailand, bringing cooler air and strong winds to upper Thailand. Temperatures in the Northeast are expected to drop by 2–4°C, with minimums ranging from 11–19°C and maximums at 26–30°C. The central region, Bangkok, and surrounding areas, as well as the East and upper South, will see temperatures decline by 1–3°C.
In mountainous areas, temperatures will range from 4–12°C in the North and 7–14°C in the Northeast, with frost possible in some locations.
Precautions for Cold and Rainy Weather
Residents in affected areas are advised to take care of their health as temperatures drop. Those in the South should remain alert to potential flooding and landslides due to accumulated rainfall. Mariners should avoid areas with thunderstorms and exercise caution in rough seas.
The department also cautions against fire risks due to dry and windy conditions in northern regions.
