20m tonne in government hands. They are not rice merchants and have paid above market price to buy it up, with many willing sellers. They are struggling to sell it by government to government deals but exports have dropped from 9m to 6m tonnes as they are asking more for it than other major suppliers. It is alleged that 3m tonnes of stock do not exist at all, and at 15,000 baht per tonne that is 45bn baht in graft. Populist policy but even more popular with Yingluck, her brother and other cronies getting richer.
