Dear Editor:
I read with great interest Michael Nightingale’s letter (Feb 25) about the polio vaccine. In his book “Slaughter of the Innocent”, Hans Reusch argues that polio was practically eradicated from Europe despite the fact that most Europeans were not vaccinated for polio. He also claims that the rate of polio went down just as rapidly in the Rocky Mountain states of America where most people were not vaccinated as it did in the rest of the country where most people received the vaccination.
Reusch was convinced that absolutely nothing of value has ever resulted from animal research, although even some opponents of animal research may find that statement to be extreme. Still, Reusch makes some impressive arguments to back up his claim that not only is animal research horribly immoral but it is atrocious science as well.
