Turmoil in Thailand

Dear Editor,

What’s going on in Bangkok in the last few weeks makes me puzzled and confused. I am living in Thailand since 10 years and meet many Thais. I keep keen attention on what is happening around both Pattaya and Bangkok. I read 2 weekly newspapers in the English language and follow the economic and political trends.

I am asking myself where is this social and political Thai awareness coming from, as the population has modest education on universal political culture. It looks like Thais are in the street to make racket rather than yearning after reforms, new constitution or political changes.

In some way I feel sorry for those Thais. They are naïve people talking of Democracy without any real knowledge what that crucial word means. Democracy is not perfect but is the best we can offer nowadays. Democracy is freedom of speech, respect of the law, hard fighting in the Parliament as opposition in full respect of popular sovereignty and last but not least, political parties, a cornerstone of a democratic society.

Best Regards,

Concerned Farang
