More than 100 bicyclists hit Pattaya’s roads pedaled to raise environmental awareness for the Green Leaf Foundation’s Midnight Bike event.  Although it’s called Pattaya Midnight Bike, the event actually takes place during the day – the name evidently just to call attention to global warming, as well as bike safety.

City, tourism and hotel industry officials joined Green Leaf Thailand President Jirapol Sinthunawa for the 9 a.m. start at Pattaya School No. 8 Dec. 2.

Cyclists pedaled south, passing the Sophon Market then turned toward Banglamung Police Station into Naklua, west through the Dolphin Roundabout, along Beach Road and back to the school. Participants earned caps and certificates at the finish line.

Co-sponsored by the Thai Hotels Association’s Eastern Region, the event focused on the importance of using bicycle transportation to help position Pattaya as an environmentally conscious resort.

Officials said the idea springs from the popularity of cycling in western countries, where roads are in much better condition and feature dedicated bike lanes, unlike any street in Pattaya.

Organizers also stressed the need for bicycle safety at the event, with proper equipment and road behavior.
