A Chinese man was arrested in Bangkok in connection with the kidnapping and torture of a countryman in Pattaya.
Deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Surachet Hakpan on Oct. 31 announced the arrest of Zhang Delong, 30, in the Ekamai area of the capital.
Known as “Mr. Tattoo”, Zhang denied any involvement in the Oct. 29 abduction of Ren Haibo, 41, from a Walking Street bar and his subsequent torture and ransom.
Pol. Gen. Surachet claimed Zhang was involved with a gang of Chinese call-center gangsters who were living illegally in Thailand. The criminals were issued student visas from the Phrae and Udon Thani immigration officers and Surachet said officials there will be investigated, as it’s obvious they were not students.
Surachet said Ren was taken from Walking Street to a house in Pong Subdistrict where he was held before being taken to a luxury home in East Pattaya. There he was blind-folded, stabbed, beaten with a baseball bat and had his finger cut off.
The assault was recorded on video and sent to his girlfriend with a demand for 30 million baht in ransom. It’s unknown if she paid.
Zhang was charged with overstaying his visa as the investigation continues to locate and arrest his accomplices.
