His sister, Pornpan Aeymungkul, 37, said Chaiwat was born into a fisherman’s family and was at home in the water. He liked to free-dive for shells and shellfish and had been doing so for 20 years, she said. It’s incomprehensible that he would die of drowning.

However, Pornpan noted, her brother had been in the hospital for the effects of alcoholism.

She went with him to dive, but when he didn’t surface, she pulled on the rope tied to him and his boat and found he had died.

The body was pulled ashore Aug. 31.
