About 50 Sattahip residents signed up to become local police volunteers to back up commissioned officers.

Pol. Col. Metawit Pradithpol, superintendent at Sattahip Police Station, opened the Feb. 11 training for new volunteers at the Sattahip District community hall.

The training covered crime prevention and drug suppression efforts to allow the public to be part of solving drug and crime problems.

Metawit said the objective of the program is to develop security for lives and property. Currently, the police force is not large enough to control crime problems, so volunteers have been assigned as assistants.

The community police volunteers are people who sacrifice their time to help society in the name of peace, he said.

The training emphasized discipline and versatility in arrests, and setting checkpoints.
