About 500 government workers, students and residents of Chonburi’s Ang Sila Sub-district planted trees, cleaned the Bang Proi canal and worked to restore the area’s mangrove population in a pre-Mother’s Day environmental event.

Sub-district Mayor Taweep Goraneeyakit opened the Aug. 7 Mangrove Forest Restoration and Conservation Project, which is a multi-step program to plant 2,500 mangrove trees, remove trash from area waters, release 25,000 fish and marine animals into the wild and give young plants to locals.

Sub-district clerk Sanchai Thonguthai said the royal initiative is a continuation of a program to teach residents about how they can preserve the environment while developing their communities.

Mangroves, especially Rhizophora plants that are difficult to propagate, are a withering resource in the kingdom, he said. Tourism and restaurants contribute to the problem by polluting waterways.

The tree-planting was held in honor of HM the Queen’s 82nd birthday, as she has long been a proponent of environmental conservation, officials said.
