Pattaya contractors will be cutting it close, predicting the renovation of Bali Hai Pier will be done “within” November – the same month the jetty is supposed to host an international naval fleet show.

Work began June 10 on the area covering 550 sq. meters where 96 more closed-circuit television cameras will be installed, an access bridge rebuilt along with a 10-rai parking lot.

The pier will reopen fully after that first phase when a second project involving smaller jobs and interior improvements to harbor-area buildings will commence.

The work began with Pattaya engineers removing utility poles and old pillars to relevel the open area. Building materials, meanwhile, were brought in for the bridge work.

Neither government nor city contractors have a good reputation for timely work – the Pattaya tunnel is four months behind schedule and the rebuilding of Soi Siam Country Club is running eight months behind – so saying Bali Hai Pier will be done “within November” leaves little margin for error.

The 40-country fleet show is scheduled to begin Nov. 13.
