Pattaya’s “big chop” continues Aug. 6, with 50 percent of the waterfront trees already pruned in the name of increased security.

About 30 workers from the Engineering Department working for the past 10 days moved through in central and south Pattaya July 25, opening up the Pattaya Beach promenade to more sunshine and spotlights in hopes of giving transvestite pickpockets and petty criminals less cover of darkness.

About 130 trees have been pruned, with chipping machines chewing up branches on the spot. The mulch will be delivered to the Pattaya Plant Nursery on Soi Chaiyapruek 2.

Workers planned to suspend trimming during the Buddhist holidays, but will resume their chopping on Aug. 6 in North Pattaya. Residents are encouraged to not park on Beach Road during the work.

Beach Vendor Yupin Chusree said she thinks the tree pruners carry a double-edged sword, making it seem safer, but making the beach walk hotter.
