Two Cambodian laborers were detained following a complaint that they slaughtered a dog and cooked it for dinner.
Pleng Pol, 37, and Iza Pleng-iza, 25, were taken into custody at a workers’ camp in Takhiantia’s Moo 2 village June 30 following the police complaint by Porntip Pikulthong, 67.
Porntip told the police she saw the two slicing up an animal she believed to be a pig. But when she inquired if she could buy some meat, the men refused. Only then did she noticed discarded body parts of a dog.
Pleng and Iza admitted butchering the dog, but insisted that they did not kill it. The canine had been a pet who died, so they decided to put the animal to good use and cook it for supper.
Police were dubious and seized the carcass and sent it for an autopsy. If it is determined the dog was killed, they will be charged under Thailand’s strict animal cruelty law.
