The chief of Chonburi’s Provincial Police has ordered Pattaya officers to crackdown on prostitutes loitering on Pattaya Beach.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Amphon Buarubporn issued his directive April 23, saying the streetwalkers lingering under the coconut trees not only damaged the image of Pattaya, but contributed to the city’s crime problem.

Pattaya police for years have run periodic – and entirely ineffective – beachfront prostitution sweeps, picking up suspected hookers, fining them 200 baht or less and immediately releasing them to return to work.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Amphon Buarubporn says streetwalkers lingering under the coconut trees on Beach Road not only damage the image of Pattaya, but contribute to the city’s crime problem.

Amphon said proper suppression requires officers perform random arrests, and that top Pattaya officers need to draft a concrete suppression plan that includes the highest fines possible.
