Chonburi Shelter and UNICEF updated Pattaya-area child-protection officials at city hall on four ongoing projects in four area sub-districts.

Representatives from Pattaya and the districts of Phan Thong, Bo Thong, and Sriracha reviewed 11 months of progress on projects that will last another two years. Similar meetings are held every two months.

The child development project is aimed at assisting youths with welfare rights. It also seeks to provide effective strategies and knowledge to social workers.

Pattaya social workers said that since the project was launched, one child was found abused by parents, 10 were at risk of becoming criminals, one was sexually abused, two were found involved in domestic violence, 538 got pregnant, 10 children received support and 17 children lacked identification cards and were effectively stateless.

The major problem found in Pattaya and surrounding areas in Chonburi is mainly family problems. Most parents are not able to support their children, send them to school, or provide any effective guidance.

In some cases parents are always working and not paying attention to their children, some are away and don’t have time to focus on raising their kids, leaving many at risk.

Some parents are even reported to be involved in human trafficking issues as well, which is where Chonburi Shelter and the UN children’s agency intervene.
