More than 92 percent of complaints leveled last year by Pattaya-area residents about local government and industry were resolved, the Center for Resolution of Complaints said.

The Pattaya CRC, one of many set up by the military after last year’s coup as part of its campaign to “restore happiness to the people”, took 7,086 complaints and sorted out 6,526 of them, director Vipawadee Wongborisut told community leaders April 2.

Vipawadee and Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome invited 37 local organizations and representatives from the 42 communities in Pattaya to attend and hear the complaints and aid provided. The vast majority of grievances focused on floods, trash, slow road works, lack of water, electricity blackouts and the like.

The CRC doesn’t solve problems by itself, but mediates between the public and relevant agencies. Last year Pattaya established a cooperative working committee involving the 37 organizations to address public complaints.

Chaiwat Klisanalom, organizer of the seminar and director of the 94.75 MHz Radio, said the CRC has brought a proactive policy to the government. But he said success depends not only on the response of government, but the participation and cooperation of the public.

The CRC plans to host similar seminars in the future and hear shared opinions from residents and organizations to find the best solution for each problem.

The problems concerned will be carefully worked through from their origin – the public – to their resolution. The CRC has 132 volunteers on its working committee, including residents and representatives from the 42 communities, and organizations involved.

Itthiphol said the CRC exists to hear the problems of Pattaya’s communities and act as a joint center where residents can come and be part of the solution. It was established because of the importance of development in a growing economy and all communities in Pattaya are important. It is mainly to raise the awareness that every hand counts and communities must work together to overcome disasters and continue to develop the country and live in harmony.
