BANGKOK, Thailand – The Meteorological Department reports that cool weather is blanketing Thailand in the wake of the New Year, with chilly to very cold conditions on mountaintops and peaks, while thunderstorms are expected in some parts of the southern region.

A moderate high-pressure system or cool air mass is covering northern and upper southern Thailand, bringing cool to cold weather to the northeast and northern regions. Central Thailand, including Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, the eastern region, and upper southern Thailand are also experiencing cooler temperatures. Mountaintops and highlands remain cold to very cold. Residents in affected areas are advised to take precautions to maintain their health due to the chilly conditions and to beware of potential fire hazards in dry weather.

Meanwhile, a moderate northeastern monsoon is prevailing over the Gulf of Thailand, southern Thailand, and the Andaman Sea, causing isolated thunderstorms in the lower southern region. The Gulf of Thailand is seeing moderate waves, with wave heights of around 2 meters in the lower Gulf and higher than 2 meters in areas with thunderstorms.

The upper Gulf has waves between 1-2 meters, while the Andaman Sea has waves of approximately 1 meter, increasing to 1-2 meters offshore. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms.

Air Quality: Dust and haze levels in upper Thailand remain moderate due to average air circulation, with no significant increase in dust accumulation expected in the coming days. (TNA)
