Pattaya, Thailand – Governor Thawatchai Srithong led a meeting with government agencies at the Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organization headquarters on August 28 to tackle the escalating dengue fever outbreak, maintaining public health standards, and efficient water resource management during the rainy season.
The rainy season brought a surge in dengue fever cases, particularly affecting children. Governor Thawatchai urged vigilance in monitoring children’s health and educating them about dengue symptoms. Preparedness for accompanying natural calamities like landslides and flooding was emphasized, especially in vulnerable districts like Bo Thong and Nong Yai.
Dr. Visitsak Polsook, Deputy Provincial Public Health Officer, reported 2,688 dengue cases and a recent fatality in Chonburi Province, surpassed the five-year average mortality rate. Intensive campaigns to eliminate mosquito breeding sites were launched, and residents were advised to seek immediate medical help for symptoms including fever, muscle pain, and bleeding.
Monkeypox emerged as another concern, with 22 cases and one fatality reported. The virus showed a tendency to target specific groups, particularly those engaged in online dating or frequent changes of sexual partners, mainly in the Banglamung area.
Aside from health concerns, Chonburi Province focused on water resource management. Watchara Promkhunaphorn, Director of the Chonburi Irrigation Project, outlined a strategy redistributing water across thirteen reservoirs in the Eastern Economic Corridor. Though reservoir levels were at 111.93 million cubic meters, lower than last year, the strategy aims to overcome water scarcity challenges during the arid season.
