Elderly man rescued from power tower in Pattaya

Grandpa Boonmee Kwanon seems to be enjoying himself on top of the 20-meter-tall electricity tower as he yells down to the people below.

A distressed elderly man was rescued after climbing a 20-meter-tall electricity tower in Pattaya.

No one was saying what drove Boonmee Kwanon, 74, to a possible suicide attempt Oct. 1, but once he got up the tower on Highway 36 in Kratinglai, he couldn’t get down.

In fact, he didn’t want to come down at first. Police summoned a monk who negotiated with the man for more than an hour. Finally, he agreed to climb down. But, due to his advanced age, he was unable.

A basket truck was called from Pattaya City Hall and he was lifted to safety.

A large crowd of people gather around the electricity tower as they watch grandpa Boonmee perched precariously on the very top.

A monk spent over an hour trying to convince Boonmee to come down from the dangerous electricity tower.



Having been persuaded not to harm himself, the elderly man begins his descent, but due to advanced age he didn’t have the strength to complete the task.




Police and rescue units in the basket crane moved in close enough to rescue grandpa Boonmee.
