A 20-year-old endangered green turtle was found dead on Jomtien Beach, a victim of sewage pollution.
Najomtien Moo 1 village chief Supoj Inyam notified the navy’s Sea Turtle Conservation Center in Sattahip Aug. 29 that a dead turtle had washed up in front of the Pu-Pen restaurant.
The female turtle, weighing almost 40 kilograms, had a broken shell and had been dead about a week. Veterinarian Kornkamol Kitikammara had the reptile transported to the Endangered Sea Animals Rescue Center for an autopsy.
Kornkamol said she believed the turtle was poisoned by sewage that has repeatedly flowed into the sea in Najomtien for most of this year. The shell likely was hit by a boat propeller after the turtle died.
