RAYONG, Thailand – The Rayong Provincial Court delivered its verdict in a case of physical assault, sentencing 46-year-old factory worker Sanpong to 3 months in prison on March 19. The incident occurred on the evening of February 16, at Rayong Hospital, when Sanpong slapped a nurse in the face multiple times, causing injuries. His actions were reportedly sparked by frustration and anger at the nurse’s words.
The court found Sanpong guilty of bodily harm under Section 296 of the Criminal Code, which applies to assault against a public official or a person performing their duties. During the trial, Sanpong admitted to the offense, which resulted in a reduction of his sentence by half. As a result, his prison term was shortened to 1 month and 15 days. However, as he had no prior criminal record, the court converted his sentence to house arrest for the same duration.
Additionally, Sanpong was ordered to compensate the victim, the nurse, with a sum of 77,273 Baht plus 5% annual interest, starting from February 16. The compensation amount was to be deducted from the 40,000 Baht Sanpong had previously deposited as part of the damage mitigation process.
