Staff of the Akom Charoen Yont Honda shop in Chonburi gather around to count 102,500 baht worth of coins that a customer paid with for a new Honda PCX 160 motorbike.

It must have been a mighty big piggybank that a thrifty customer had when he fully paid for a new Honda motorbike in baht coins.

Suwanna Chunrum, a saleswoman at Akom Charoen Yont Honda in Koh Jan, said Sept. 26 that an unidentified customer called the showroom the day before asking if it was OK to buy a bike with 10, five and one-baht coins.

Never one to turn down a commission, Suwanna agreed and the customer arrived at the showroom Sept. 25 with two boxes full of coins, most bagged with 100 baht in each, to buy a Honda PCX 160, list price 102,500 baht.

Suwanna said it took the staff about 20 minutes to count all the coins.

The saleswoman said she’d never seen a customer pay for a motorcycle, or even a deposit, in coins. In fact, few customers pay in full, choosing to put down 1,500-10,000 baht as a down payment and then paying the balance in installments.
