The Chonburi Tourist Attraction Association told members that the best way to bring more Chinese tourists to Thailand is through online marketing.

Association President Tithipat Sirinattasrikul and Tourism Authority of Thailand deputy director for East Asia Santi Sawangcharoen said June 28 that Chinese travelers already are Thailand’s biggest democratic, with more than one in four foreign visitors coming from the mainland.

But China is a huge market, with 700 million people having access to the internet. Increasingly, members were told, they are booking their own trips, tickets for tourist attractions and accommodations online, rather than buying package tours.

Last year 38 million tourists visited Thailand, but Chonburi tourism firms can increase their share of the market by focusing on specialized offerings, such as sports, food, medical treatments and weddings, Santi said.
