Six years of light bulbs, batteries and other dangerous waste finally got proper disposal when Pattaya sanitation workers dug in on the backlog at a trash-transfer station in Jomtien Beach.

Olar Chanpuey, director of the Pollution Control Department, led the operation to sort garbage into categories for waste that can be disposed of in landfills and recycled.

Olar Chanpuey, director of the Pollution Control Department, led the Sept. 12 operation to sort garbage into categories for waste that can be disposed of in landfills and recycled. The dangerous waste, such as batteries and electronics, needed special handling, however.

The Soi Chaiyapruek 2 disposal site has been holding the hazardous items for six years, but has reached capacity, forcing authorities to finally dispose of it properly.

Olar said residents have been good at separating recyclable trash and scavengers also have aggressively picked out plastic and bottles. However, the department is available to take away non-recyclable items by calling 038-253-211.
