Sattahip police are trying to identify a mother who left her newborn infant in a banana field.

Wilai Tonelung, 51, and her husband discovered the crying, 3.2-kilogram boy lying in a foam box at their banana plantation on Soi Wat Khaokontamat in Sattahip May 21.

Approximately a week old, the boy appeared to be in good health, other than head-to-toe ant bites. He was taken to the community clinic for an initial checkup before being transported to Sattahip Km. 10 Hospital for a more-thorough examination.

Wilai said she had only seen incidents like this on the news, but never thought that she would experience such a heartless act by a mother herself. She said if no one wanted the baby, she and her husband were more than happy to adopt him.

Sattahip police are trying to locate the mother and encourage anyone with knowledge of the crime to come forward.
